WARNING: Show may not be appropriate for young children.

Two years ago, Bob Baker welcomed GHOULA into his historic theater (the oldest puppet theater in the country), for our first "STRINGS" night of "movies, marionettes, and mayhem." We screened BLUEBEARD (1944), and Bob spoke, even bringing out the original marionettes used in the film. We did a second "STRINGS" night months later, but Bob was too sick to attend. Sadly, Bob Baker past away last year, but luckily his theater is still here, and still carrying on his legacy of putting on great puppets shows every weekend.

Please come out to this enchanted oasis (while it lasts) that has been entertaining and inspiring the children (and adults) of our city for over fifty years, for this rare spooky night-time event that tempts the spirits... if you dare.

About the film: THE MILL AT CALDER'S END (2014)
In the remote village of Calder's End stands an old windmill, a repository of dark secrets. Nicholas Grimshaw has returned to this haunted place, his childhood home, intent on breaking a generations old family curse. Grimshaw's journey takes him deep below the decaying mill, into mysterious, forgotten catacombs, where upon he confronts the very source of the evil that has corrupted his family. "The Mill at Calder's End" is a Gothic tale inspired by the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and M.R. James and is told with the use of 36 inch tall bunraku rod puppets operated by puppeteers dressed in black.

THE BOB BAKER MARIONETTE THEATER'S GHOST(S):

Although people generally associate ghosts with violent/sudden deaths, there are many other theories as to why a ghost will haunt a certain location. Some believe that spirits will return to places that (in life) gave them great pleasure, or perhaps sites where (in life) much time was spent. There is also a theory that confused ghosts sometimes seek out humanoid objects to possess like wax figures, mannequins, or dolls, and thus gravitate to spots where these objects can be found (old wax museums, children's bedroom's, etc.)

So, naturally (or super-naturally) the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, the oldest continuously-operating puppet theater in the United States, is said to have a phantom of a former puppeteer lingering around (seen by staff), watching the staff from his favorite seat on the east side of the theater (last row against the wall, three seats from the aisle). Perhaps he just doesn't want to leave this happy place, or maybe he just likes being around puppets. Additionally, he is seen in the backstage area. On the wings (on the West side of the building), there are mirrors so that performers can check their puppets, or practice moves. While doing this, they will see the ghostly puppeteer (in the mirror's reflection) watching them.  When they turn around, no one is there. Plus, whenever something goes wrong during a performance such as a string breaking or a set falling, it's always blamed on the resident spook, presumably unhappy about something in the show.

In ancient times, the "illusion of life" created by marionettes was thought to be work of other-worldly forces. Who knows, maybe this resident "ex-puppeteer" still lends a hand during performances, animating the inanimate objects, and making them move in realistic ways. Is it possible that old habits die hard,... even if the ghost didn't?

SPOOKS and SPOKES

Calling all ghost-hunters, paranormal-investigators, psychics, sensitives, and those interested in getting a glimpse of the "other side." Whether you are acting alone, or in a team, GHOULA wants you! Whether you are a seasoned pro or first-timer,...

GHOULA WANTS YOU!

for Los Angeles' Largest Paranormal Experiment!

Date: March 22nd (Sunday)
Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm
Location: North Hollywood
Ventura Blvd (From Coldwater Cyn to Lankershim)
Lankershim (from Ventura Blvd to Chandler)
Check ciclavia.org for map

Admission FREE!

Ventura Blvd and Lankershim are the two oldest roads in the Valley, going back a couple hundred years (and they were possibly Native American trails before that). When the early Spanish settlers started building Missions in the 1700s, they also created a path that connected these Missions (The Royal Road or "El Camino Real") for traveling and distributing supplies between outposts. That was California's first road, and every Mission is on this route with the exception of the San Fernando Mission. This strange anomaly is the result of moving the original Mission from one side of the valley to the other side (from North Hollywood to San Fernando) and thus they had to create a detour off of the main road. Today, the original "Royal Road" is called Ventura Blvd, and that detour is Lankershim. The first Mission is thought to have been where the two roads intersect. Needless to say this general area near Universal Studios (plus both roads) has many legends of restless spirits (ghostly monks, soilders, outlaws, etc.) and tales of buried treasure.

Which brings us to our experiment...

The CICLAVIA event this Sunday will shut down these two historic (haunted) roads to vehicular traffic, which gives everyone 7 hours (9:00am to 4:00pm) to transverse these streets by foot or bicycle to document anything "out of the ordinary" since paranormal activity can happen at anytime (even in direct sunlight). From electro-magnetic anomalies to shivers down your spine, if you feel it, witness it, or hear it, we want to know about it, and we want to know exactly where it happened. So, bring your EMF meters, your "Spirit Boxes," your cameras, or just yourself, and let your "goose-flesh" guide you.

If you accept our challenge, all we ask is that you go to this event, have fun, and note the location of any activity, evidence, or "heebee-jeebees." Please keep your info confidential to discourage copy-cat contamination. Then, email your findings to ghoulahq@live.com

Based on everyone's data, "hot spots" will be determined. Then, we will compare this info with the actual stories associated with these two streets, and reveal the results.

GHOULA's Annual Report 2014

(Alhambran F.E. Ormsby, creator of the 13 month calendar, 1929)

HAPPY BOOOOOOOOO YEAR!

GHOULA has many great things planned for the upcoming year.

But first, let's take a last look back at 2014.

The question that we were asked most often last year was "When is SPIRITS with SPIRIT coming back?" So, let's address this first... We took a break from our monthly meet-ups in historic (haunted) bars to concentrate on other events we wanted to do, namely off-beat ghost tours of our city. The temporary hiatus will continue thru 2015, so that we can focus on other events in mind for 2015. This is not the end however, "SPIRITS with SPIRITS" will return (most likely in 2016), since there are still so many haunted restaurants/bars we haven't been to yet.

That said, it should be mentioned that if a special opportunity arises this year, we might break from form and do an impromptu SPIRITS with SPIRITS. For example, last year, the Magic Castle opened their doors to GHOULA for a special SPIRITS with SPIRITS, which included a discussion of the "Castle's" many ghost, a walking tour of the haunted areas led by magician/author Tom Ogden, some eye-witness accounts from the staff, and of course drinks and socializing. Obviously, if another amazing opportunity presents itself, we will do our best to make it happen.

The big news of last year was our unique "one-time-only" ghost tours of Los Angeles, where we picked a topic, and talked about everything one would want to know about that subject. Despite the very niche nature of these tours, surprisingly just about every tour sold out. Thus, we want to thank everyone who came out and supported the obscure ghost-lore of our city. These tours includes topics such as Houdini, Valentino, Ghostbusters, Laurel Canyon, haunted buried treasure, and haunted mirrors. The second most asked question this year was when are we going to bring back these tours. Unfortunately, there are no plans at this time to repeat those tours (there are too many new events coming).

GHOULA also finally did our ghost tour of Griffith Park throughout the summer months. If you have been following our group for the last couple of years, you know we have wanted to do this tour for the last couple of years, but for some reason we always had to cancel it. Since forces seem to always be against this tour, we called it "The CURSED Tour of Haunted Griffith Park." This year we did it (despite a few new challenges and obstacles).

Last October, GHOULA collaborated with our friends at Captured Aural Phantasy Theater to create a tribute to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion (which had its 45th anniversary last year) called "Tales of the Lonesome Ghost." For the first time ever, performers acted out the original (but never used) script for this beloved attraction when it was intended to be a guided tour of a haunted house. Concept art for that incarnation was also presented throughout the show, and the event was held in a haunted venue that may have a connection to the famous dark ride. Look for more GHOULA/CAPT collaborations next year.

Also in October, GHOULA also brought back the ghost-themed "walking" tour, we initiated two years ago, the "Haunted Red Line Tour," where we take groups along the Metro's Red Line. stopping at various stations to talk about the ghosts and haunted sites at that spot.

Because of our group's LA-centric interest in the phantom folklore of this city, GHOULA participated in Los Angeles' Halloween Convention, ScareLA, where other groups and companies that create spooky content and events in October, got together under one roof to share (and promote) what would be happening in October with each other and the public. It was so much fun, GHOULA plans on returning next year.

GHOULA was also invited to participate in the annual "Archives Bazaar : LA as Subject" event at USC to discuss the connection between our city's history and its ghost folklore.

Last, but not least, last year GHOULA published "Hollywood Ghost Comix," a collection of ghost-themed comic strips created by local artist Victor Avila.

2014 was a great year for GHOULA, and judging from the surprises that are in the works, 2015 will be even better.

ALL ABOARD!!!

When: October 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th,
(Every Sunday in October)
JUST ADDED... November 2nd (Day of the Dead)

Time: Tour starts at 6 pm (tour is about 3 hours)

Meeting Place: The palm tree-lined island in front of Union Station
800 North Alameda Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (map)

Price: FREE TOUR + Metro "Day Pass" ($7 + $1 for a "Tap Card")
Please purchase the Metro Pass (not a "Metrolink" ticket) before the meet-up to save time. The machines can be confusing, so look for metro day fare and not "add fare."

Parking: See below.

Los Angeles' lore is filled with tales of secret tunnels. Whether its supposed opium dens, rum-running passages, discontinued "Red Car" tunnels, munchkin transports, celebrity/mistress escape routes, or simply chambers belonging to a race of subterranean lizard people, many buildings and homes claimed to be connected to other buildings and homes below street level (if only we could find their openings).

So, is there a better way to explore the haunted history of Los Angeles than by traveling underground from location to location via our very own (dead) Red Line Metro Subway with the other living dead of this city?

We will meet-up at Union Station (the starting point for the Red Line) and then travel through 13 stops to the North Hollywood Station (at the end of the line), getting off and on along the way. In addition to Union Station and the North Hollywood Station, we will stop at few other stations, step off the train, rise to street-level, and discuss the ghosts and haunted sites visible from that spot before going back aboard to the next stop on our tour.

Come out and hear spooky tales about a spirit solider, a vanishing padre, and a ghostly car. As well as many other phantom figures from our past that haunt our present.

(see a review of this tour here...)

Parking: Since everyone participating in the tour will need a Metro Day Pass to ride the subway, it is advisable to park at one of the FREE lots provided by the Metro at either the North Hollywood Station (our end point) or the Universal City Station (or any of the other free lots on connecting Metro lines), and then just take the Subway to Union Station to meet-up with the group (The lots around Union Station are expensive and they may close early).

LAST GHOULA BUS TOUR!

GHOULA presents...
The CURSED Tour of
HAUNTED GRIFFITH PARK

NOTE: This tour will be coming to an end in September. These are the last tours of the year. It is uncertain whether this tour will return next summer, because GHOULA has another project planned for next summer. This may be your last chance to see it.

Not only is Griffith Park one of the largest urban parks in North America, it is also the most haunted public space in the United States, and the site of some of the oldest ghost stories our city has to offer, including the infamous 150 year old curse! Even today, it is said that there are so many sightings still, that the ranger's office has a "special occurrence" form just for citizens that want to report their ghostly encounters.

Those of you that regularly attend GHOULA events may already know that we have been talking about doing (and attempting to do) this tour for the past few years, but due to circumstances beyond our control... it never happened. Its almost as if the "Los Feliz curse" itself was preventing us. Well this summer, GHOULA is defying the curse, and finally making good on our promise.

So, come join us if you dare... for this unique bus tour as we explore 4,310 acres of haunted history.

DATES: September 28, 2014
TIME
: 12:30pm, 3:30pm, (7:00pm SOLD OUT)
(tour runs 1 1/2 to 2 hours each)

3rd Annual Peg Entwistle Memorial Hike

HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Due to the high temperatures and limited access, everyone is on their own for this. We recommend that if you plan on going, bring water, and hike with a buddy. Otherwise, there is a great alternative FREE event honoring Peg Entwistle tonight at 7:30 PM at the Beachwood Café, where her ghost also haunts (check link below)..

On September 16th, 1932, Peg Entwistle committed suicide by hiking up to the Hollywood sign, and jumping of the "H," not only ensuring her name would live on in infamy, but likewise becoming Hollywood's most famous spirit. Come out and join us for a self-guided hike along that haunted trail to Hollywood's most famous haunted landmark (which celebrates it 91th anniversary this year), and meet-up behind the "H," if you dare...

THE DATE: September 16th, 2014 (
Tuesday)
(on the anniversary of her death)
THE PLACE: Behind the "H" of the Hollywood Sign
(Directions to the "H" are below)
THE TIME: 5:00pm - 7:00pm (Sunset)
(meet us at the top)

NOTE: Since everyone goes at their own speed, and everyone will be arriving at different times after work, there is no set meet-up time. We will just be hanging out at the sign during the time mentioned above. The hike is normally about 3-4 miles (round trip) and takes about 1-2 hours (round trip), but see "NOTE" (and updated directions) below. Also, there is no organized paranormal investigation included in this hike, but local ghost-hunters are welcome to bring their own equipment, and investigate on their own if they wish.

THE GHOSTS:

"I was hiking near the Hollywood sign today, and near the bottom I found a woman's shoe and jacket. A little further on I noticed a purse. In it was a suicide note. I looked down the mountain and saw a body...."
--- Anonymous call to the Hollywood Police Station

82 years ago, this September, a sad, depressed, possibly drunk, unemployed actress left her home on Beachwood Drive and started walking up the road to the Hollywood sign. She had be completely cut out of a RKO movie that was to be her big break in Hollywood. (Incidentally, there will be a free outdoor screening of that film in the parking lot of the Beachwood Market at 7:30pm). On that treacherous hike, that probably took her most of the night, she eventually made it to her destination, the fifty-foot letter "H" at the beginning of the internationally recognized Hollywood sign (then the Hollywoodland Sign). She climbed a ladder that was attached to the backside of the flat metal structure, and leaped to her death once she reached the top. It is thought that she did not die instantly, but instead lingered for hours in the brush below, where her corpse was eventually discovered by hikers. For a short time she was simply known as "The Hollywood Sign Girl," until her published suicide note was recognized by her uncle. Her name was Peg Entwistle.

When people tell her tale, they always point out the ironic twist that occurred shortly after her death, a letter arrived at her address, stating that she had landed the lead role in a new play about a woman who commits suicide.  However, there's the bigger (more obvious) irony. This act of desperation over the lack of a show-biz career, ended up making her more famous (or infamous) than any of her working contemporaries. Not everyone can easily name the stars of the early 1930's, but most people know the Hollywood Sign Girl.

Her legend seems to grow with each passing year, and as it does, so do the stories of her restless ghost near the famous landmark. Most people describe her apparition as a young woman dressed in a 1930's style white gown walking along a trail (sometimes dazed). She is most commonly seen by hikers (not unlike those that originally found her body) and dog walkers in the very early or very late hours. Witnesses claim that she is accompanied by the strong scent of the gardenia flower (her favorite perfume). Some accounts even describe her reenacting her final moments stepping off of the top of the "H" only to vanish as she falls. She seems doomed to repeat the last moments of that last night over and over again, just as we also seemed doomed to repeat those last moments with each retelling of her story. (for more info about the ghost of Peg Entwistle...)

NOTE (and updated directions): Because the surrounding neighborhood has complained about traffic, the city has cut off the closest access points to the public trails (even for pedestrians). As a result, currently one can not access the Hollywood Sign from Beachwood Canyon, so please consult a map. It appears the next best way to get to the Hollywood Sign is to follow Canyon Dr. up the hill to the end, and park in the lot (as if you were going to the famous Bronson Cave). That paved road turns into a trail. Follow the trail extension from Canyon Dr up the hill til it dead-ends at the Mulholland Hwy (trail), and go left on this trail as it zigs-zags across the mountains until you get to a split in this trail. Follow the right-side trail that goes up hill (and not the left downward one). Once on that new trail, follow it (going towards the Hollywood sign) until it dead ends at a paved road (Mt. Lee Drive). Turn right on the paved road, seemingly away from the Hollywood sign. The road will take you up the backside of Mt. Lee, offering great views of the San Fernando Valley and Forest Lawn, to the top of the mountain and a dramatic reveal of the Hollywood sign, the same view Peg Entwistle had before she jumped (incidentally Peg's studio, RKO, is dead center in this view). Below is a link to a map, which you should study, before going out there, since its very easy to get turned around out there on the trails (and there is limited cell reception up there.) There's another route that's shorter but more difficult... Park on Lake Hollywood Dr. (at Wonder View Dr.). Walk up Wonder View Dr. to Trail Head, and take the "Tree of Life" Trail along the ridgeline to the Hollywood Sign. Again, consult a map before attempting.
(for more info on alternate ways to the Hollywood Sign...)

DIRECTIONS:  (See "NOTE" and updated directions above) Follow N. Beachwood Drive up the hill to the end (just before the "Sunset Ranch Hollywood" stables). You'll see cars parked around a trail head, so park anywhere you can. Follow (on foot) the dirt trail up and along the ridge adjacent to the stables. Cell phone reception is not very good up there, so note the directions before you set off on foot. This trail will merge into a larger trail (Mulholland Hwy). Make a hairpin turn left (South-West) on this new trail, and follow it (going towards the Hollywood sign) until it dead ends at a paved road (Mt. Below is a link to a map, which you should study, before going out there, since its very easy to get turned around out there on the trails.

Real Ghosts with REEL Ghosts!

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959)
Date
: September 12 (Friday)
Time: 7:30pm
Theater: The Bing Theater (LACMA)
5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90036
Admission: $5.00

This is your chance to see this movie about ghosts in an actual haunted theater! (Note: this event is not hosted by GHOULA, and is just an event we feel our members should know about. Thus, the event staff may not answer any questions regarding their ghosts.) The whole square block containing LACMA (and the Bing Theater) are said to be haunted by a few ghosts, as well as an ancient murder victim (LA's oldest unsolved murder), known locally as "The La Brea Woman."

NOTE: This screening is the first part of a William Castle double-feature. The second film will be the classic "13 GHOSTS," which will be screened using a new print that allows patrons to "see" the ghosts without the "ghost viewers" that were issued during its original release. This evening is part of the "Let There Be Fright: William Castle Scare Classics" festival in September.

"House on Haunted Hill" (1959) is the first of William Castle's Horror "gimmick films." When it was originally screened, a plastic skeleton (sometimes an inflatable skeleton) was hoisted over the audience in effort to scare the patrons. Most of the time, people just threw popcorn at it (but had great fun all the same). This trick would later be employed at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion (it's debatable whether its any scarier there).

This classic horror film has a special place in GHOULA's black heart. The very first GHOULA event was a screening of this movie (with Emergo) as a fundraiser for the preservation of the Ennis House (the movie's "House"). Also, this film was in the line-up of GHOULA's first year of its "Haunted Films @ Haunted Places" free outdoor film series.

Now, GHOULA is pleased to announce its involvement with this special screening of the film at LACMA. GHOULA has been asked by the Motion Picture Academy to provide the EMERGO for this screening.

The Ghosts of Laurel Canyon Tour

GHOULA presents...
The
Ghosts of Laurel Canyon Tour

NOTE: This specialty tour is part of a series of tours GHOULA is conducting this year (and only this year), where we take a theme and run with it, telling only ghost lore that fits the theme. This gives us an opportunity to visit locations or tell stories that are not typically heard. These are one-off tours that will not be repeated. We are only doing these "bus tours" this year. Past tours have included... The Haunted Houdini Tour, The Ghost-buster Ghost-Bus-Tour, The Many Ghosts of Valentino, and The 13 Richest Ghosts of Los Angeles, and now this tour...

DATE: Sunday, August 24, 2014 (SOLD OUT)
TIMES: 12:30pm and 3:30pm
(tours run 1 1/2 to 2 hours each)
PRICE: $35.00
MEET-UP LOCATION
Cat and Fiddle Pub
6530 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles (map)
NOTE: The Meet-up will be in the court yard at the entrance.

Eventbrite - The Ghosts of Laurel Canyon Tour

“When I got home I mixed a stiff one and stood by the open window in the living room and sipped it and listened to the groundswell of traffic on Laurel Canyon Boulevard and looked at the glare of the big angry city hanging over the shoulder of the hills through which the boulevard had been cut."
-- Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye (1953)

For little over 100 years local outsiders, eccentrics, and artists have sought solace in this seemingly isolated canyon (5 minutes from Hollywood). Unfortunately, this idyllic refuge has also been the site of many murders and violence over those same years. Whatever it is that attracts these alternative personalities to this enclave also seems to provide the perfect recipe for paranormal activity, because it seems that Laurel Canyon's ghost lore also goes back almost as many decades, giving it a reputation in Los Angeles as the place where the spooks dwell.

If you have taken one of our specialty tours this year, you have most likely already heard a story about a haunted place in Laurel Canyon. Richard Carradine, our tour guide, grew up there, and loves this local lore, and thus tries to work in at least one Laurel Canyon ghost in each tour. Think of that individual story as an appetizer, for this main phantom feast presented in this tour. If you haven't been on one of our tours, here's is you chance to hear more stories and lore from a man who lived in the canyon for 40 years collecting such stories. This tour will provide Mr. Carradine a chance to tell stories that have never been told publicly (and do not appear in print or online) including his own person encounters with the unknown.

Seating for this bus tour is VERY limited. Only 24 seats!
(12 guests per tour. 2 tours. 1 Day)

Tales of the Lonesome Ghost!

GHOULA presents...
The "Park" After Dark:
Tales of the Lonesome Ghost!

This is a live show created by
Captured Aural Phantasy Theater

THE DATE: August 13th, 2014 (Wednesday)
THE PLACE: Cahuenga General Store (aka Hallenbeck's)
5510 Cahuenga Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601 (Map)
THE TIME: 8:00pm - 10:30pm
(no-host food service from 8pm to 9pm, Show starts at 9pm)
ADMISSION: $20.00 (SOLD OUT!)
Eventbrite - "Park" After Dark: Tales of the Lonesome Ghost

This August represents the 45th anniversary of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. We just couldn't let this milestone slip by without a proper celebration to honor our favorite dark ride. So, for ONE NIGHT ONLY we will pay our last respects to one of the Mansion's most under-appreciated ghosts and its ties to L.A. with a tribute to "The Lonesome Ghost."

Captured Aural Phantasy Theater will resurrect the original (unused) script for Disneyland's Haunted Mansion for a site-specific performance in a haunted venue.

Come join us for a spooktacular show in a haunted historic cafe as we try to recreate the imagined "Lonesome Ghost" that never was (from the never built 1950's version of the Haunted Manson) while conjuring up the real "Lonesome Ghost" that possibly is (from the former home of the possible inspiration for that Haunted Mansion character). Also, as a nod to Disneyland's proposed, but never built, "haunted" restaurant (like the restaurant inside the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction), there will be themed food/drink service before the show (available for purchase). This is your chance to glimpse a Mansion that never materialized.

GHOSTLY BACKGROUND:

The idea of a classic "Haunted House" attraction at Disneyland seems to have always been a part of Disney's land, even if it wasn't fully realized until 14 years after the park's opening (and 3 years after Disney's death).

The original concept for this attraction was that guests would be led through the house by a tour guide like the Winchester Mystery House in Northern California. Along the way, the guests would encounter a disembodied voice that would speak directly to them called "The Lonesome Ghost." As this walk-thru evolved into a dark ride, the human guide was eliminated and the idea of the ghostly voice was expanded (or possibly the two parts were merged), and eventually given the new name the "Ghost Host."

While Disney's designers were working on the early version of this now famous ride, were they influenced by something happening in a small North Hollywood studio a couple of miles away? Was the "Lonesome Ghost" a reference to the local radio personality, who went by the on-air alias of "The Lonesome Gal?"

One has to remember that in the 1950's, "The Lonesome Gal" was a wildly popular late-night radio show that was heard on over 400 radio stations across the country. The secret to the show's success was a simple gimmick. Between musical interludes, the nameless "Lonesome Gal" (portrayed by actress Jean King) would whisper sexy/suggestive non-sequiturs, speaking into the microphone as if she were talking to her lover. Lonely males would listen to her program and daydream that she was talking directly to them. During the Korean War, soldiers listened (and re-listened) to boot-leg episodes that they brought with them. To avoid lonely men stalking her (and to create a little mystery), Jean King wore a black mask when appearing in public to promote the show or the show's sponsor (a local downtown brewery that made "Brew 102").

Given that the early "Lonesome Ghost" version of the Haunted Mansion was developed during the height of her "Lonesome Gal" fame, the "lonesome" moniker for the mostly voice-only character (who addressed the tour directly) seems more than coincidental. Although there have been many reasons given for the elimination of the "Lonesome Ghost," one little discussed possibility is the very litigious nature of Jean King, who would threaten lawsuits to anyone trying to capitalize off the character she created.

The building where those historic radio programs were recorded  (as well as the upstairs apartment used by Jean King) still exists today, and its said to be haunted. Just about any paranormal phenomena one can think of, from disembodied voices to phantom footsteps to moving objects, have been seen/experienced by the current (and past) tenants.

In a strange case of the after-life imitating art imitating life, could the "Lonesome Gal" now be a "Lonesome Ghost" like the one she inspired?

"And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
-- Friedrich Nietzsche

Come join us... if you dare... for this unique ONE TIME ONLY event as we travel across our city and discuss the ghost lore of L.A.'s most haunted mirrors, and gaze into them to see if anything stares back.

Within the world of the paranormal, there is a sub-genre of ghost stories that revolve around haunted objects... such as possessed dolls, cursed jewelry, and (of course) enchanted mirrors. Tales of these magic windows (that let us glimpse another dimension) go back hundreds of years and have permeated pop culture from fairy tales (Snow White) to classic literature (Through the Looking Glass) to contemporary horror films (Oculus).

Strangely, Los Angeles has lots of this "ghostly glass" scattered around town. Is there a connection between our dark history and these supposed portals for lost souls? Or, is there a more uncomplicated reason why there are so many haunted mirrors in Los Angeles, a town so (wrongly or rightly) associated with vanity and narcissism? Is it simply because we just are always trying to see ourselves (that we sometimes see "others"). Then again, maybe there something more sinister happening in the city of angels?

NOTE: No one under 21 years of age should take this tour.

Seating for this bus tour is VERY limited. Only 24 seats!

LA's Top 13 Richest Ghosts BUS TOUR!

GHOULA presents...
Los Angeles' Top 13 Richest Ghosts
BUS TOUR

Ghosts, Gold, and GHOULA...

Come join us for this unique ONE DAY ONLY event as we travel across our city and explore some of the places where LOST TREASURE is thought to be buried and discuss the GHOST STORIES surrounding these locations.

Within the realm of spirits, there is a particular kind of apparition that attaches itself to lost gold generally to protect the hidden treasure from discovery. European folklore is filled with such stories (including a reference in Bram Stoker's "Dracula"). It is even said that the carved pumpkin ("Jack O' Lantern") of Halloween has its roots in this strange phenomena.

Is it any wonder that California ("The Golden State") would have a long history of such "golden ghost" tales? More specifically, Los Angeles, where gold was first "discovered" (before the "Gold Rush"), has more than its fair share of these spooky tales of lost fortunes. Even though they say "You can't take it with you," these local "Au" apparitions refuse to be separated from their wealth.

WARNING: We will visit the secret locations of buried gold (according to the spirits), if you try to use the knowledge learned on this tour for personal gain... you may encounter an angry ghost!

Seating for this bus tour is VERY limited. Only 24 seats!

The Valentino Haunted Bus Tour!

GHOULA presents...
The Many Ghosts of
Rudolph Valentino
BUS TOUR

Does the flame that burns twice as bright, burn half as long? Rudolph Valentino was only 31 years old when he died, and yet he had achieved a super-stardom that has never been duplicated. His death as cinema's first sex symbol caused mass hysteria among his legions of female fans. His larger than life persona not only left behind an indelible mark on Hollywood metaphorically, it seems to have done so super-naturally as well. Since his death in 1926, his restless ghost has been routinely seen (and sought after) all over California, with most sightings occurring in different locations within our city limits. It seems that even after his life was extinguished, his flame continues to burn brightly.

Come join us for this unique ONE DAY ONLY event as we travel across our city and explore some of the local haunts connected to Hollywood's most ubiquitous ghost...
